A medically fragile child is one who, because of an accident, illness, congenital disorder, abuse or neglect, has been left in a stable condition, but is dependent on life sustaining medications, treatments, equipment, and has need for assistance with activities of daily living.

Medically Fragile Crosses all Diagnoses

Diagnosed medically fragile by a medical physician, this child may:

  • Have chronic health care conditions such as diabetes, oxygen dependency, cerebral palsy (CP)
  • Be a transplant recipient and require special health care support, such as tube feedings, suctioning, tracheotomy care, or a respirator
  • Have limited mobility and require special health care support due to paralysis or chronic disease

Dream House helps connect medically fragile children and their families with a caring community. The families caring for these precious children need a circle of support.

Most of us cannot imagine providing care for a medically fragile child, managing both the physical and emotional needs. Therein lies the dilemma.

The medically fragile child’s needs can easily become the focus of daily living. Over time, the needs of the family may be neglected. Stress levels become overwhelming. The family unit is at risk.

Dream House addresses the special life-care needs for medically fragile children by preparing families and communities to safely and effectively for them.
